Stay home: The singer of hit song Stay Home wrote a song about her mother who died in a plane crash in 2003, and she took it on a journey of self-discovery.
The song was written in 2013 while she was still in the US and it was the result of her trying to figure out her place in the world, she told VIBE.
“It was an experience of being a new person, feeling new, trying to understand yourself,” she said.
The song is called Stay Down and she said it is about growing up and accepting that you’re going to be a part of the world for a long time.
“I think it’s important to not think about how old you are,” she added.
She also said she had “lost a lot” of friends in the accident.
“We have lost so many people in this tragedy, and that’s not just from the US, but also Australia,” she told the programme.
“So I think that’s the hardest thing, and also really hard to deal with, and to deal even more with how much you are part of this community that you love.”
Ms Minaj said she did not have any regrets about the crash, even if it happened while she lived in the United States.
In 2017, she was awarded an MBE for her bravery in the crash.
